beans n' weenies

I'm leaving Thursday to go camping for 5 days and I gotta come up with some camp recipes. So far I have planned some foil packet vegetables and I'm guessing that's not gonna cut it, so I need some input here guys:

What is your favorite "tried and true" camp food?

I'll have a fire pit to use and I'm bringing my (charcoal) barbecue so I'm not exactly "roughing it" ..and I think someone might bring a propane stove.
I have lots of cast-iron pans and enamel ware.
I also have a cast-iron dutch oven (and a very vague idea of what to do with it).

**Oh, and please, try to come up with something a little more creative than 'smores :p

gosh, i LOVE your blog name! where are you going camping? we go a few times a year to the sierras. sounds pretty 'roughing it' to me. i'm going to try & find some websites for you. i think you have to be careful because of bears too, right? are you camping in a tent? (we use a 5th wheel now) i know you can boil potatoes ahead of time & recook them on a skillet. i'd suggest cooking things ahead of time, freezing them & keeping em in an ice chest in your car. i'm not sure how that would work out for you. i'll blogmark you & check back.

jane's idea is right, pre-cook or semi pre-cook the food :) marinate the meat and wrap it with aluminium foil and just chuck it into the fire or BBQ later, good way to bake potatoes too.. just wrap in aluminium foil and just it in :) but i always bring instant noodles and can food + can opener to be safe.. have a great trip!!

Guess who's boiling potatoes ;)

Thanks for your help, this is sure going to make things easier for me.

Instant noodles is a GREAT idea, too!

We are going to be sleeping in tents and bears are something I had not even thought of! (...duh!) I'll just have to keep all the food in the car, away from my tent and I think (hope) I'll live through this trip!

I'll post when I return to let you know where I went (don't want any uninvited guests :p) and should have plenty of pictures to share.

bring some lovely delicious juicy hamburgers. mmmmm, I love hamburgers. Sometimes when I'm home alone I like to make hamburgers and I rub them sensually all over my body and lick the grease. Then I get out the buns... Oh yeah, that's hot.... Ooops, I messed myself...

hi carrie,
I dont mean to frighten you, but please don't leave so much as lettuce in a tupperware container outside of your car (WITH the windows UP) Some campers by us did this & had a 'visitor'. Also put away, chapstick, toothpaste, lotion, ANYTHING with fragrance. A dog is a good thing to take camping as their barking scares bears.
Please look @ my blog entry for 6/23 as your blog name reminded me of it! If you'd prefer I email you with ideas, I can do that. baby wipes are a good thing to take.
sorry if i'm being motherish. :/

Eth, that was by far the most graphic, uh, "recipe" I've gotten yet. Thanks for that.

Jane, thank you for all the camping tips! They are very much appreciated. We did end up with our own "visitors". Deer decided to join us around the campfire. I've never seen them up so close and seemingly unafraid of people. We had a great time and I can't wait to do it again.
